I’ve been meaning to write about this for a while because it’s what’s getting me enthused at the moment. Yes really, I have to be careful on this one as I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but take a quick look and see if you get it? If you do you’re getting a glimpse of the future believe me. It can’t happen soon enough for me either. I want crowd sourced local information out there whenever I hit a new town or area. And I’d love to find out where the best places are to eat, drink or catch live music.

If you’re a social business like a cafe, restaurant, pub, club, hotel, gym, any business that acts as a social hub, then time spent looking at promoting your business using location based social media will probably be time well spent. It’s relatively free advertising after all, the only cost being your own time or employing someone to get you up to speed and online. Once you’re up and running it’s crowd sourced local intelligence that will power your online presence. It’ll be well worth offering tempting deals to get people in there in the first place and loyalty deals to keep them coming back, but it shouldn’t take too much time to manage.

Which one is best?

No one would bet against Facebook coming out top here eventually, although plenty of the other location based sites and applications out there have their own merits. Right now in the UK my favourite is probably foursquare.com. It’s fairly easy to set up and claim your own business on there and a doodle for smart phone users to use and checkin. Games aside (and who really cares about being the mayor of your local) it’s a great way to find local food, nightlife and more, including tips and deals. Foursquare is enormous in the U.S. and that’s usually a pretty good indicator of where we’re heading. BUT Facebook are in the game now. Foursquare had a good head start in the U.S. but it’s been slower to take off here. Facebook deals are rolling out so that checking into Facebook places you should soon see deals in your area. And let’s face it Facebook have the numbers already, to use foursquare you have to hope that smart phone users will download the app. Most smart phones already come with Facebook installed and most customers will already be using it.

If you want a Facebook presence then you need a business PAGE not a user account pretending to be your business. Look for your Facebook place when people have been checking in and claim that too, you can merge it with your page too if you already have one.

Applications to look out for also include http://gowalla.com/, http://www.yelp.com/, game based http://scvngr.com/ and the BIG player now on the block too http://www.google.com/places/. Google places have been around for a while but they’ve been increasingly adding social features and now include location based checkins too.

Whichever one wins out it’s exciting times ahead.

Mildly amusing aside of the day. I was invited to take part in a “webinar” which turned out to be a glorified conference call. As someone who’s hard of hearing you can imagine just how excited I was at that prospect. Then to cap it all it was a windows only conference call which failed again at the last hurdle from my windows test machine. Could it have been Internet Explorer only I wonder? Who knows!

I’m not anti-windows by any stretch of the imagination but I am a little perplexed and amused by the number of businesses out there that fail to accept that the world has moved on. Browsing the Google Analytics for sites that I manage this morning I couldn’t help but be impressed at the number of hits we’re getting from a variety of browsers and operating systems. Including iPhones, iPads, Android, Blackberry plus variations of PC, Mac & Gnu/Linux OS’s and browsers. And let’s not get started on screen resolutions. Make it work at resolutions between 1920 x 1080 to 320 x 480 please

It’s a diverse world out there these days. If you just serve a shrinking and specific proportion of those users then your days are probably numbered.

I’m really pleased to have got the Bear on foursquare. They’re one of the first Bridgnorth businesses to offer customers who checkin to social networking sites with their phone, the chance to get deals. It’s taken a while to catch on with smart phone users, but at last it seems like we’ve turned the corner and people are much happier to use their phones to find and share local information, helping them to keep an eye on what’s happening nearby and what deals are available.

Facebook deals are available in the UK now too, so expect to see plenty of chances to get money off or loyalty deals when you checkin to a business while you’re out and about. Technotik offer a consultation and support service to local businesses keen to find out if Facebook, foursquare, twitter or other social networking sites can help them drum up more business.

It’s being around for a while now and I’ve been an enthusiastic user of location based social media like foursquare and more recently Facebook too. It’s all about crowd sourced local intelligence. Get to a new area and you can quickly find out what’s available nearby and what businesses have been recommended.

Have a look at http://foursquare.com, The Bear on foursquare and you can email me @ info@technotik.co.uk to find out more.

I couldn’t help myself when I found the new groups feature, I HAD to have a play with it. And sad as it maybe I love playing with social networks new features and wondering at new possibilities. It’s endless!

Here’s the new link – http://www.facebook.com/groups/ – plenty of new features and a new interface. A full breakdown would warrant a new article.

I’ve been recommending that businesses and organisations set up Facebook pages and not groups for quite a while as the writing has been on the wall for sometime now. Not the “Facebook wall” that would be a pun too far.

This new feature is enormous though. I listened to the live press conference and my first reaction was that this was Facebook emulating Diaspora‘s “aspects”. Diaspora is built on the foundation of separate social groups called aspects. You can share with each of your aspects separately or share with them all at once. [Interestingly Diaspora also ties in quite nicely with Facebook's other big new announcement yesterday - the ability to "own" and download your own data. Diaspora promises to be able to import data from elsewhere to help build new accounts. Mark Zuckerberg has supported Diaspora publicaly and financially too.]

Google Me – Google’s own new social network is rumoured to hit any time now and research from the company suggests that social groups will be fundamental to this too.

Facebook has the user base though and it looks like they got in there first. It’ll be interesting to see where this goes next.

Not always a good idea but it can be a real time saver and a great way to reach different networks without multiple logins, duplicate posting or re-editing content.

Not all networks suit the same content though.

Like a lot of people I’ve used the official twitter facebook application on occasion to post tweets to facebook. It’s a fairly easy solution to get status updates and tweets in sync but it’s important not to forget to engage with the audience. It’s not just a one way conversation any more. It seems obvious but it’s all too easily forgotten, social networking is social by definition.

Using the old retweet syntax (RT ….) on twitter means that your tweet will show up on your facebook status via the application so will that make sense?

Building active facebook pages can be much more useful than just building a personal account and here the solutions to automate posting seem a little more restricted. I’ve used Social RSS and NetworkedBlogs facebook applications to send a website RSS feed to a facebook page. Social RSS seems to work the most seamlessly and unintrusively of the two although to use it beyond a trial period you need to pay a subscription. Or you’ll see the speed of posts slow right down until it seems almost intermittent. Social RSS does also have the option of a box on the front page too though, not just a tab. Which is a great way to link to previous web articles.

I’m still not sure about NetworkedBlogs. It seems OK but the hoops that you’ll need to get through to set it up and manual refreshing of content make me wonder if I’m saving any time at all.

My favourite solution for juggling multiple accounts is still Hootsuite and in the few weeks that I’ve been using it I’ve been really impressed by new features, ease and speed of use. It’s easy to modify each post to suit each social network from one place and you can monitor the networks up to a point too. One new feature just this week implements automated RSS feed posting. Not so detailed a post as the other two solutions but it’s fast and it’s free. If only it didn’t use Hootsuite’s ow.ly URL shortening service which pops up a Hootsuite toolbar when a user clicks on the link. Apart from that it gets my vote.

Ultimately it all comes down to time though doesn’t it. Ideally each social network should be approached according to it’s target audience and it’s own technical or defacto protocols. But if it’s a simple one or two liner with a link you can probably share it across them all.

We have a brilliant team together and this year we’ve also formally changed our name and become an Arts festival, including Literary events and more Arts events than ever. My involvement started out with running an acoustic/unplugged event down on the Quayside next to the River Severn. Superb backdrop to what’s been a great afternoon of music for the last four years.

Now I’m also running the festival website http://bridgnorthmusicfest.com/, twitter account http://twitter.com/bnorthfestival, Facebook pages http://www.facebook.com/bridgnorthfestival plus a fair bit more. I’m dragging everyone kicking and screaming into the 2010′s despite struggling to get some even using email not so long ago. It’s really paying dividends now though, we’ve made some brilliant contacts via social media and our reach is spreading all the time.

We’re open, inclusive and more diverse than ever. If you’re interested get in touch and get involved.

I’ve been using Hootesuite http://hootsuite.com/ to manage a Festival website that I look after and I’m very impressed so far.

It’s simple to add twitter, facebook account pages, facebook fanpages, myspace and several other social networks and manage them all from a well laid out tabbed web page. I can finally get rid of the (slightly flakey) facebook twitter pluggin and quickly send specific updates to all of our social networks from the one screen. Not only that but you can view the streams too so it works both ways. Socially as these things should.

I first spotted it being used by the brilliant @designblend http://www.designblend.co.uk/

It’s probably over the top for an individual account but invaluable for any business or organisation that’s spread across social networks and making frequent updates.

I’ve been meaning to sort this out for ages. I can’t believe I’ve taken so long to build a decent looking site for myself. As a developer I’ve always used the excuse that my own website is like a builders house or a mechanics car, never quite finished and held together with bluetak and bits of string. Too busy building sites for other people and that my work speaks for itself without me waffling on and the usual tiresome sales pitch.

Here it is though at last. An opportunity to show off my work all in one place so I’ll be updating over the coming weeks.
